Joleon Lescott has hailed Phil Foden’s football intelligence after the midfielder’s goalscoring show in Manchester City’s 3-1 victory over Wolves.

Foden started and finished City’s second goal at Molineux, arriving unmarked in the box to tap home Raheem Sterling’s centre and wrap up a slick team move.

It was another notable display from the 20-year-old, but for all his ability, Lescott has been equally impressed with the midfielder’s understanding of the game.

"It means making the right decisions at the right time with the abilities you have and knowing the capabilities of your team-mates," said the two-time Premier League winner when defining football intelligence and he feels Foden's brain is equal to more experienced players.

“What people don’t appreciate is his intelligence,” added Lescott during the We’re Not Really Here matchday show.

“We can see his ability, we can see his work rate but his football intelligence is second to none. He’ll be up there with the best in the squad.

“He knows where he should be when the ball goes in behind and Raheem is running onto it and he’s there and Raheem could pick him out.”

Foden’s strike was the 22nd goal he has directly contributed to in his 33 starts since breaking into the first team.

His influence has steadily grown since the Premier League restart in June and  following David Silva’s departure, many expect the Academy graduate to fulfil the role vacated by his hero.

Given their similarities, Lescott feels the comparisons with Silva are unavoidable and believes he has a big opportunity this season.

“It’s massive for Phil,” he said.

“I think every season will be big for him, due to the comparisons with David Silva and the 10 years of dominance he had at the club.

“Whenever Phil plays he is going to be compared to that, with the stature, the left foot and the similarities in the game.

“Arguably this means more to Phil because he is a City fan.”
